The Tesla Model Y Performance takes the refreshed Model Y and adds serious pace, adaptive suspension and a more focused cabin without sacrificing the efficiency and practicality that made the original so successful. It reaches 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, offers 580 km of WLTP range and averaged just 17.5 kWh/100 km during our test. The ride is very firm and I still miss having basic driving information directly in front of me, but as a fast, spacious and well-equipped electric SUV, it remains remarkably difficult to dismiss.

  • Excellent efficiency for the performance

EXTERIOR

The facelift gives the Model Y a cleaner and more distinctive front end, with the full-width light signature replacing the previous nose with its prominent Tesla badge. On the Performance, the changes are backed up by larger 21-inch wheels, red brake calipers and subtle Performance-specific details.

Our test car was finished in Quicksilver and also featured the large carbon-fibre rear spoiler, which projects noticeably from the tailgate. Performance logos are projected onto the ground when opening the doors, while the electrically operated boot can open automatically when you approach the rear of the car with your phone.

INTERIOR

The cabin remains extremely minimalist, but this latest Model Y feels considerably more mature in its materials and finish. The Performance adds supportive front sports seats with heating and ventilation, carbon-fibre trim and small Performance details without making the interior feel overly theatrical.

Almost everything is still controlled through the central touchscreen, including ventilation and many basic vehicle functions. Rear passengers get their own display for media and games, heated seats and a reclining backrest, while the panoramic glass roof makes the cabin feel particularly open. There is still no conventional instrument display or head-up display.

DRIVING

The Performance uses adaptive suspension, although even in normal driving our car remained noticeably firm. That suits its character, but buyers expecting the softer ride of a regular Model Y should be aware that the difference is substantial.

Steering weight and chassis settings can be adjusted through the Dynamics menu, including a more permissive traction setting for enthusiastic driving. Our car also had Enhanced Autopilot. It works well in the right conditions, but during our test it could become hesitant in poor weather and on more complicated roads, so it never felt as seamless as the rest of the Tesla experience.

PERFORMANCE

Acceleration is immediate and very strong, with 0-100 km/h taking 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. The Performance also has a dedicated Launch Mode, which is activated through the Dynamics settings before holding the brake and accelerator together until the car is ready to launch.

Efficiency remains one of its strongest qualities. Over the final 300 km of our test, we recorded an average of 17.5 kWh/100 km despite a week of relatively spirited driving. DC charging is rated at up to 250 kW. We saw around 200 kW at a Fastned charger, while a Tesla Supercharger in Edegem only delivered around 130 kW during our session.

PRACTICALITY

Despite the performance focus, this is still a very usable family SUV. Rear legroom and headroom are generous, the floor is completely flat and the rear seat uses a 60/40 split, while the centre backrest can also be folded independently for longer items.

There is 822 litres of luggage space behind the second row, with considerably more available once the seats are folded, plus a useful 116-litre front compartment. Small details such as the powered rear backrests and automatic boot opening also make everyday use easier.

PRICE

The Tesla Model Y Performance starts at €61,990 in Belgium including VAT. That places it well above the entry-level Model Y at €39,990, but still gives the Performance a strong price-to-performance position against many similarly quick electric SUVs.

Our test car is equipped with Enhanced Autopilot, although the exact as-tested price is not confirmed. Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is not yet available for use in Belgium, but European approval is expected to follow, which could make it available here in the near future.

JOHNNY DRIVES VERDICT

The Model Y Performance is one of those cars that is easy to criticise in detail, yet difficult to dismiss as a complete package.

The ride is harder than I would like, I still miss having basic driving information directly in front of me, and the Autopilot system did not feel as polished as expected during our test. But none of that changes the fact that this is a very fast, extremely efficient and genuinely practical electric SUV.

What impressed me most was how well the Performance balances those different roles. It can deliver serious pace when you want it, yet still return remarkably low consumption and offer enough space to work perfectly well as an everyday family car.

It may no longer feel as revolutionary as Tesla once did, but judged purely as a car, the Model Y Performance remains a very convincing proposition.
