750 hp open-top supercar tested on Belgian roads

The McLaren 750S Spider takes everything that made the 720S special and turns the intensity up another notch. Lighter, sharper and more powerful, it is still remarkably usable for a 750 hp open-top supercar. Add an 11-second roof, razor-sharp steering and a twin-turbo V8 that makes every drive feel like an occasion.

PROS
  • Exceptionally direct and precise steering
  • Explosive twin-turbo V8 performance
  • Surprisingly compliant ride for a supercar
  • Fast 11-second retractable roof
  • More usable and practical than it looks
CONS
  • Extremely expensive, especially with options
  • Carbon-ceramic brakes can feel very firm at low speeds
  • Fuel consumption rises quickly when driven enthusiastically
  • Luggage space is still limited by everyday-car standards

EXTERIOR

Tokyo Cyan grabs your attention first, but the details are what make the 750S Spider fascinating. The radiators are hidden inside the headlight units, while the bodywork is packed with functional aero. Glass C-pillars help manage airflow around the rear, while an active wing doubles as an air brake above a gloss-black diffuser and transparent hexagonal mesh that deliberately exposes some of the mechanics underneath.

Gloss-black Vortex wheels measure 19 inches at the front and 20 at the rear, backed by carbon-ceramic brakes with silver calipers. The almost invisible taillights and stealth sports exhaust keep the rear remarkably clean. Then there are those dihedral doors, rising to almost two metres when open. Low ground clearance is less intimidating thanks to the front axle lift and 360-degree camera.

INTERIOR

The cabin is minimalist, focused and refreshingly free of steering-wheel clutter. Two rotary controls put the handling and powertrain modes right at your fingertips, while the automatic/manual shift selector sits alongside them. You can even shift both up and down using a single paddle behind the wheel.

The vertical infotainment screen covers the essentials, with heated seats, reversing camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system. The instrument display moves with the steering column, keeping it perfectly in view, while ESC gets its own dedicated button. There is plenty of Alcantara, and our car's comfort seats are electrically adjustable with memory.

DRIVING

The first thing you notice is just how direct the 750S feels. The steering is razor-sharp, the chassis feels firm without becoming punishing, and the brakes are powerful and predictable. Then there is the V8, brutally fast when you ask for it, but surprisingly easy to live with when you calm things down.

We averaged 16.4 l/100 km during enthusiastic driving, while a gentler pace brought that down to around 11.4 l/100 km. Low ground clearance could easily make city driving stressful, but the front axle lift and 360-degree camera take much of the anxiety out of it.

PERFORMANCE

The 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 is the heart of the 750S, sending 750 hp and 800 Nm to the rear wheels through a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The numbers are outrageous: 0-100 km/h takes 2.8 seconds, 0-200 km/h just 7.3 seconds, and top speed is 332 km/h.

But the figures only tell part of the story. This engine dominates the experience, with the kind of soundtrack that makes the Bowers & Wilkins system feel almost unnecessary.

Compared with the 720S, the 750S is 30 kg lighter and gains another 30 hp, changes that sound modest on paper but contribute to a car that feels even more immediate.

PRACTICALITY

For something that looks this uncompromising, the 750S Spider is surprisingly usable. The 150-litre frunk even comes with straps for your yoga mat, plus a 12V socket and a light. With the roof closed, another 58 litres of storage is available behind the cabin.

The retractable roof disappears in just 11 seconds and can be operated at speeds of up to 50 km/h, so you do not always need to stop when the weather changes. And when it refuses to cooperate completely, you can still lower the rear window and let the twin-turbo V8 provide the soundtrack.

PRICE

In Belgium, the McLaren 750S Spider starts at €345,000 including VAT. Our test car, fitted with additional options, is priced at €383,000 including VAT. For comparison, the 750S Spider has a base MSRP of $381,200 in the United States.

At this level, the numbers are almost as dramatic as the performance. But the 750S Spider is not trying to be rational transport. What matters more is whether the experience feels special enough to justify the price, and that judgement belongs in the verdict.

JOHNNY DRIVES VERDICT

The 750S Spider is spectacular without being needlessly difficult to live with. The steering is razor-sharp, the chassis feels immediate and the twin-turbo V8 dominates the experience, yet the car remains surprisingly usable on real roads. The front axle lift, 360-degree camera and genuinely useful storage make everyday driving far less intimidating than its appearance suggests.

Drop the roof and the whole thing becomes even more theatrical. The V8 soundtrack is suddenly everywhere, every input feels immediate and even an ordinary road can feel like an event. It is extremely expensive and fuel consumption can get equally serious when you are having fun, but as an open-top supercar it combines drama, precision and real-world usability exceptionally well.
